Open Forum: Most Admired World Leader

February 18, 2009 § 10 Comments

There is an old adage that states, “A great man can save a dozen lives; a great leader can save a million lives.” Indeed, leaders are rare and necessary. One could argue that it is better to have a bad leader than to not have a leader at all; anarchy would ensue otherwise.

With this in mind, which world leader(s) past and present do you most admire? Explain why.

Culture 101: Knock, Knock! Who’s There?

February 6, 2009 § 7 Comments

door2.jpg

The Germans are known for their forthrightness and hospitality. Contrary to popular beliefs, they are highly mannered people. They always knock before coming in. This means to “come in” even if there’s no response or if the person inside does not want them to come in.

When a German knocks on a door, he will do it like he really means it. A polite knock is not going to do it. In fact, such meekly knock could very well be perceived as an insult.

I arrive at the flower market half an hour before its closing. Most flowers have been sold out except for the majestic chrysanthemums. The vendor offers them at a steep discount.

A local artist is showing off some of his flower-themed paintings.

This orchid plant (left) is beautiful. Mom will be pleased with the gift. Maybe I should give her an artificial one (right) instead.
